Tweet, Think, and Be Merry

Last week’s trip to Glasgow wasn’t just to check out the BBC Scotland building, I was actually there as part of the Cross Creative scheme. CC brings together people from different fields of the creative digital industries to share their opinions with each other, and with invited guests from other, related areas of the CDIs.

This session’s guest was Mike Coulter, a social media ‘guru’ with a wealth of knowledge and advice that was only outweighed by his enthusiasm.

Over the course of the day Mike really managed to make even the most ambivalent members of the group really sit up and listen to the opportunities that social applications can offer them, both as individuals and companies.

By the end of the day I had a bunch of invaluable notes and actions to relay to the team back at Tuna. We’ve already set up some ‘audits’ – these are reports on any activity that Tuna or some of its key projects generate on the web. This provides us with some really useful data, but for companies that deal more directly and frequently with customers and clients, this kind of information could transform your business, and I’d really recommend that you get in touch with Mike for advice on strategy.

By the end of the day every single one of us had caught the bug, and signed up to Twitter. I’d pretty much dismissed Twitter as a distraction – but I’ve decided to give it a fair trial (you might have noticed the new Twitter button on the right hand side of this page – feel free to check me out). This should sit nicely with my attempts to ‘blog more often’.

Overall it was a fantastic day. Cross Creative now shifts focus to our research trip to Silicon Valley, and hopefully some of the advice that we received from Mike will ensure that we meet ‘new friends’ and ‘contacts’ – not complete strangers.

You can read Mike’s impressions of the day here.
